Working party update - 28/06/2026

Following a period of working parties where due to the time of the year some of us miss sessions, it was good to get down to the woods again yesterday armed with a batch of new tools, thanks to a grant from Wealden District Council for which we are extremely grateful.

Having tools owned by the Society is a huge game changer for us, as up until now we have tended to use our own. The new tools support the working parties operation enabling us to really get to grips with some of the challenges we face in the woodland clearance.

New tools include:

  • Powered Chain Loppers,

  • Powered and unpowered Secateurs,

  • Manure forks (lightweight for moving cut undergrowth),

  • Fire beaters,

  • Powered and manual pump sprayers,

  • Saws and PPE.

Saturday saw the new tools put to full use with our continuing to clear the Glade/Old Quarry pack to the pond.

Bob was busy creating more posts and rails to provide edge protection to the newly exposed bank edge and to replace an extremely time expired fence exposed by out clearance.30600AC6-49D0-45C8-9600-9E93AB697807.JPG

Leaving the main working party to tackle the usual tangle of brambles, fallen tress, and invasive species and also detail spraying of the regrowth in the quarry and main ride areas in what was one of the hottest working party sessions of the last few years.

New member Tony got straight to work after a welcome to the group, it’s so nice to see new people joining the small dedicated working party, who appear to have been buoyed on by the return of the ‘Char Wallah’. New members are always welcome and (attendance permitting) there is usually a brew or three available!

With the area nearly complete (one or two more sessions), we will then be looking to relocate to a different area of the woods to continue the clearance which is all so visible now.

The pond, refreshed with recent rain has started to lose its ‘scum’ of pollen etc from the surface giving the the fish some respite too.
